TRAINING PROGRAMS

As the only remaining voluntary, teaching hospital in Harlem, health and health-related education are important components of the North General Hospital mission.

PROGRAMS

We believe that the delivery of high-quality primary health care that is accessible, effective and cost efficient requires health care practitioners to have a deeper understanding of the socio-cultural background of patients, their families and the environments in which they live.

North General Hospital sponsors four accredited residency-training programs: internal medicine, psychiatry, general surgery and podiatry. North General also participates in graduate level training for residents in health care administration, respiratory therapy and social work, and offers training opportunities for medical students.

The Helene Fuld College of Nursing has been educating students for over 60 years and is chartered by the New York State Department of Education. One of a few institutions of higher learning located in East Harlem, the College graduates 240 students a year that become registered nurses in a health care environment that is increasingly unable to meet the demand for nurses. The College prepares licensed practical nurses to upgrade their credentials to Associate Degree Registered Nurse status and in so doing, provides upward mobility to a largely minority student body.
