SPECIAL SERVICES
“Of the 15,790 persons living with AIDS in Manhattan, 6,258 currently reside in Central and East Harlem.”
The East and Central Harlem communities rank among the highest in the city in numbers of AIDS cases and surrogate markers for HIV. Many adults in East Harlem – nearly 1 in 11, report at least one of the following behaviors that put them at risk for HIV: using injection drugs; having unprotected anal intercourse; exchanging sex or drugs for money; or having a sexually transmitted disease.
According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the incidence of HIV in East and Central Harlem ranks among the highest in the city. In response to the growing epidemic and the disparities in health care, North General Hospital has renewed its commitment to those inflicted by HIV by relocating and expanding the department of HIV/AIDS to 1824 Madison Avenue – The Annex.
The AIDS Center’s approach to clinical care is multidisciplinary, integrating a broad array of hospital services on behalf of patient-focused care. The team includes medical providers, nursing, master level social workers, social work assistants, psychiatrists, dieticians, senior health educators, community outreach coordinators, peer educators, and HIV counselors.
