Compared to New York City as a whole, more people in East Harlem are of Hispanic and African-American race/ethnicity. In Central Harlem, more people are of African-American race/ethnicity than citywide. Citywide, 25% of residents are African-American.
While one in three residents of East Harlem is of African-American race/ethnicity, close to 7 of every 10 residents of Central Harlem is of African-American descent. Over one half of the population, (55%), of East Harlem is of Hispanic origin, double the percentage citywide (27%) and in Central Harlem (20%).
