According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the incidence of HIV/AIDS in East and Central Harlem ranks among the highest in the city. In response to the growing epidemic and the disparities in health care, North General Hospital has renewed its commitment to those infected with HIV/AIDS by relocating and expanding the Department of Special Services (formerly HIV/AIDS) to 1824 Madison Avenue – The Annex.
Having been a New York State Designated AIDS Center for nearly eighteen years, the Department of Special Services, which cares for patients with this condition at the Hospital, has long been staffed by leaders in the field of infectious diseases.
From its inception, the Department of Special Services' approach to clinical care has been multidisciplinary, integrating a broad array of hospital services on behalf of patient-focused care. Collectively, the Department of Special Services team has over 100-years of experience in this specialized field of medicine. The team includes medical providers, nursing, master level social workers, social work assistants, psychiatrists, dieticians, senior health educators, community outreach coordinators, peer educators, and HIV counselors.
