Emergency Department

Quality emergency care is a fundamental right and access to emergency care should be available to all patients who require emergency services. North General's Emergency Department provides people of the Central and East Harlem community and beyond with unobstructed access to state of the art and compassionate emergency care 24 hours/7 days a week.

North General's Emergency Department is dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of care to all persons, regardless of age, race, religion, culture or their ability to pay. The Emergency Department is committed to delivering rapid, timely and quality assessments of patients by a specialized staff of Board Certified physicians, expert nurses and other supporting personnel. The Emergency Department provides this service 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Annual volume has been growing, now reaching 36,500 visits.

North General's Emergency Department also operates two ambulances within the New York City 911 system. These ambulances are staffed by highly trained paramedics and EMTs who strive to deliver top quality and compassionate pre-hospital care. In addition, the Emergency Department is a designated 911 receiving hospital and a Level II trauma center and it receives patients from both FDNY ambulances and from other volunteer ambulance providers.
