Cardiovascular Services

Heart disease is the leading cause of adult hospitalization in Central and East Harlem. Additionally, heart disease is the leading cause of death in Central and East Harlem.

The North General Hospital Cardiology Service specializes in the assessment and diagnosis of heart disorders using state-of-the-art technology, equipment and procedures. North General has partnered with Mount Sinai Medical Center to improve cardiac care in Harlem by providing access to primary care cardiology, comprehensive diagnostics, high quality inpatient care, and timely referrals to advances in cardiac services for patients who are at high risk.

The Cardiology Service at North General Hospital has special expertise in detecting and treating hypertensive heart disease and congestive heart failure, which are the deadly consequences of hypertension, a condition that is rampant in the African-American and Latino communities.

The Mount Sinai Hospital operates the diagnostic cardiac catheterization laboratory at North General Hospital. This lab is one component of the integrated continuum of cardiovascular screening, diagnostic and intervention services the hospitals have made available to residents of East and Central Harlem with the goal of providing increased and more timely access for residents of these communities.
