so that they might take action to get the help they need.
October 2007 - Michael Davidovits, PhD, LCSW of the Department of Psychiatry
was awarded $50,000 from the Aetna Foundation for the
program “Church Links: Improving access to mental
health care for residents of Harlem.” This
program will improve collaboration between clergy and
participants in communities of faith, and mental health
providers. The Department of Psychiatry, together with
the Department of Pastoral Care and Education, will offer
mental health trainings for clergy in our area, clinical
liaisons that can offer on-site assessments and can
facilitate referrals for treatment, and community
psycho-education for the entire congregation. The
goals will be to de-stigmatize mental illness, improve
access to care and generally to foster productive dialogue
among all the parties involved about how best to address the
mental health needs of members of communities of faith.
October 25, 2007 – Dr. Linda Williams, Interim
Chairperson of Medicine and Program Director, Internal Medicine, was pleased to announce, on behalf
of the Department of Medicine, that our 2007 graduates have
achieved 100% pass rate on the American Board of Internal
Medicine Certifying Exam.
The
Department of Medicine and all of North General Hospital
salutes the Graduates of the Class of 2007 in their
achievement and their new status as Board Certified Internal
Medicine Physicians.
October 17, 2007 - The
Friends of North General Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary Group
were pleased to present a cholesterol-testing machine to
Guedy Arniella, Director of Community Outreach at North
General Hospital. The Outreach Department performs
over 1,500 cholesterol screenings a year and the Friends
generous donation will aid in their testings.
September 28, 2007 – The International
Trends & Services Facet of the Greater New York Chapter
of the international women’s organization, The Links,
Incorporated, in collaboration with the American Diabetes
Association, North General Hospital, University of the West
Indies Development and Endowment Fund, Mona, Jamaica and The
Lions Club, Mona, Jamaica conducted an international video
conference about the impact of diabetes on families in the
United States and Jamaica.

new study released in August suggests sodas sweetened with
high fructose corn syrup may contribute to the development
of diabetes. The study from researchers at Rutgers
University shows sodas sweetened with high fructose corn
syrup contain high levels of compounds that previous
research suggests may play a role in the development of

- In an effort to share firsthand how inner city
institutions are coping with today's health care challenges,
Congressman Charles B. Rangel and U.S. Secretary of Health
& Human Services Michael O. Leavitt met with local
physicians and elected officials at North General Hospital
on July 16.The in-depth discussion, which also included North General
President and CEO Samuel J. Daniel, Mount Sinai Hospital
President Burton Drayer, NYS Lieutenant Governor David A.
Paterson, New York State Assembly Member Keith Wright, and
City Council members Inez Dickens, Robert Jackson and Melissa Mark Viverito, shed light on the successes North
General has had in confronting medical disparities in the
area, as well as the challenges that still exist in building
a healthier Harlem community.

15, 2007Heart disease, diabetes and cancer stand in the way
of leading a long, healthy life: these leading causes of
death in men are preventable. The spotlight was on
men’s health at North General Hospital this Father’s Day
weekend and the urgent need to address the health
disparities for African American and Latino men. North
General Hospital Men’s Health Forum, “Evening of
Motown” was held on Friday, June 15th.The free-to-the-public
event included roundtable discussions on pressing health
concerns and practical ways to address them (including
Stress and Heart Health, Prostate and Colon Health and
Fitness and Nutrition), a free buffet supper and live music
by Knappertime. Free
screenings for diabetes, cholesterol, prostate cancer,
Hepatitis C and HIV were also offered throughout the event.

(1190) for "Dialogue with Dinkins," a public
affairs program hosted by Mayor David Dinkins, on which they

specialized Roundtable Discussions that would be featured at
the forum.

2007 - In
conjunction with the Apollo Theater
Foundation, the Hospital’s Community Outreach Department
presented their third annual Seniors Health Fair. This
free event included health screenings,
giveaways, wellness activities, important information
regarding exercise and nutrition, and health handouts. A
specially-priced Amateur Night featuring Senior performers
and recording artist Gerald
Alston followed
the Health Fair.

29th, 2007 - On Tuesday, May 29th, North General
Hospital celebrated our Fifth Annual Eugene McCabe
Memorial Golf Classic at Whippoorwill Golf Club in Armonk,
New York.The
generosity of our friends and donors helped us raised more
than $130,000 towards the hospital’s programs and
services.The
Golf Classic was created to honor and celebrate the
life and vision of North General Hospital’s co-founder,
Eugene McCabe. Support of the tournament will not only help
us to continue to provide the essential services so urgently
needed in our community but it also will help us to continue
to celebrate the life and vision of Mr. McCabe by continuing
his mission.

Hospital in a professionally choreographed dancercise and
stomp routine on February 26, the first event in a series.
These intrepid nurses are galvanizing national attention in
a Jenny Craig Weight Loss Challenge, which is being
piloted in Harlem.

22, 2007-WBLS Public Service Director, Bob Lee, set up shop in
North General’s main lobby on February 22nd -
the final screening day for Going Red (during Women’s
Heart health month). With give-way incentives, rhythmic
background music, & outside WBLS signage, Bob was able
to draw additional folks to get screened. Promo PSA’s ran
on WBLS during that day, encouraging people to come to NG
for a screening.

2007 - The Friends of North
General Hospital held their inaugural reception at Commerce
Bank on 125th Street.In celebration of National Heart Health Month, the
event also raised funds towards the Hospital’s Community
Outreach Department, so that they may continue to provide
free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings throughout
the community.

2007 - Seven
“Young Heroes” spent their Valentine’s Day afternoon
creating and delivering care packages and valentines for 80
North General Hospital patients in need of some cheer. The
doctors at North General Hospital were excited the students
were warming the hearts of some of their patients.The Young Heroes, one of three of City
Year’s Youth Leadership Corps programs, develops
middle-school youth into emerging civic leaders through
community service and an interactive curriculum that focuses
on social and community issues.

Cardiovascular Research, Dr. Hencock Saint-Jacques.The interview highlighted the Hospital’s
one-year-old Cardiac Catheterization Lab as Saint-Jacques

that heart disease is the number one killer in Harlem.

awareness about heart disease, rallying the community -
especially women - to take charge of their heart health.

Harlem and across the country.
