PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

North General Hospital has historically organized services in line with its mission and in response to the healthcare needs of the communities it serves.

PEDIATRIC WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

“The national goal is for 80% of residents to receive exercise and less than 15% to suffer from obesity. But for Harlem, one in three adults gets no physical activity. Furthermore, one in 3 residents in East Harlem and 1 in 4 of Central Harlem are obese.”

By addressing the issue of weight management at an early age and teaching children how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we can begin to turn around the trends in obesity. The Hospital offers a 12-week after-school program for children 10-16 years of age. The program includes: medical management, diet modification, nutrition information, physical activity, behavioral modification and parent education to support program goals and healthy lifestyles. In addition, the Hospital is:

Working with community based organizations and churches to develop healthy lifestyle programs for mothers of infants and children of all ages.

Collaborating nationally to increase the use of pedometers among families as a means to increase physical activity effectively but inexpensively.
