MEASURES OF PREVENTIVE HEALTH
Smoking – causes health disease, stroke, emphysema, lung cancer and many other illnesses. Currently one-quarter of adults in East Harlem smoke, which is the experience of New Yorkers as a whole, and is twice as high as the national goal of 12%. In Central Harlem the incidence is higher, as one in three adults smoke. Most, however, want to quit, and more than half have tried in the last year.
Exercise, obesity and diabetes – as New Yorkers exercise less and eat more, the population is becoming more overweight. Being overweight puts people at risk for heart disease and many other health problems, especially diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic illness that can lead to heart attack, blindness, kidney failure and amputations. More than one in four adults in East and Central Harlem gets no physical activity. One in 3 residents of East Harlem and 1 in 4 residents of Central Harlem is obese. The national goal for exercise is that 80% of residents exercise and less than 15% would suffer from obesity.
Risk Behaviors for HIV/AIDS – Many adults in East Harlem – nearly 1 in 11, report at least one of the following behaviors that put them at risk for HIV: using injection drugs; having unprotected anal intercourse; exchanging sex or drugs for money; or having a sexually transmitted disease.
