MATERNAL & INFANT HEALTH

The health of mothers and children is an important measure of the overall health of a community. Ensuing that children get a healthy start and learn healthy behaviors has many long-term benefits. Across 3 important measures of maternal and infant health, the residents of East and Central Harlem experience poor outcomes when compared to the city as a whole and Healthy People 2010 National Goals:

Early Prenatal Care – Early Prenatal Care (care initiated in the first trimester) – With a national goal of 10%, pregnant women in East Harlem, Central Harlem and New York City as a whole have poor access to care (38%, 36% and 30% respectively) receive late or no prenatal care

Low Birthweight – Low birthweight (under 2,500 grams/5.5 lbs) – the percentage of East and Central Harlem children that are born with low birthweight (10% and 11% respectively) is twice as high as the national goal (5%).

Infant Mortality – Infant Mortality – the infant mortality rate in East Harlem is double the national goal (9.3 deaths vs. 4.5 deaths per 1,000 live births). Central Harlem, with an infant mortality rate of 12.4, experiences infant deaths that are close to three times the national goal.
