North General is the only not-for-profit, teaching hospital in Harlem.  Its very origin is rooted in the idea that people of Central and East Harlem should have access to the highest quality care in their own community.  In recent years, North General has invested significant resources to improve patients’ access to primary care with the goal of reducing the unmatched health disparities they face.  But we’re more than just quality healthcare.  We’re working hard each and every day to improve the community of Harlem:

• We are Harlem’s largest private employer. 

• We have played a major role in the revitalization of our historic neighborhood by leading the housing development along Madison Avenue.

• Our Community Outreach and Health Education Programs provide over 10,000 free cholesterol, glucose and Hepatitis C screening tests a year.

• We work collaboratively with community-based providers to address the complex health problems faced by the residents of this community. 

• We provide services to marginalized patients in our community.

• We work with Foster Care agencies to provide care to some of the most vulnerable children in our community.

• We operate a school-based health center at East Harlem’s PS 57 elementary school 

• We have established numerous Centers of Excellence to offer medical expertise, superior nursing and advanced technology to meet the community’s varied healthcare challenges.
