COMMUNITY HEALTH STATUS

As reported by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in their Community Health Profiles, 2003, residents of East and Central Harlem suffer disproportionately from the burden of illness and mortality. East Harlem and Central Harlem represent two of the forty-one neighborhoods profiled by the City of New York. When compared to other neighborhoods, East and Central Harlem residents experience the following:

Report Card on Health – Below average (bottom 10 neighborhoods) scores for the following conditions: general health, maternal and child health, infectious disease (including pneumonia, influenza and HIV/AIDS) and chronic disease (including heart disease, diabetes, lung diseases).

How Residents Rate Their Own Health – In East Harlem 30% of residents rate their health as “Poor” or “Fair”, and 25% of Central Harlem residents provided the same ranking. This is significantly higher than the citywide average of 19% and national average of 14%.

Leading Causes of Death and Hospitalization – heart disease, cancer and AIDS caused the most deaths in 2001 among Harlem residents. Not surprisingly, heart disease is the leading cause of adult hospitalization. East Harlem has one of the highest child asthma hospitalization rates in New York City (16 per 1,000 children, compared to a rate of 6 per 1,000 children citywide). Death rates for all causes were 45% higher for Harlem residents than across NYC as a whole, and hospitalization rates were up to 75% higher -- (35% higher in Central Harlem, 75% higher in East Harlem).
