THE AIDS CENTER

The East and Central Harlem communities rank among the highest in the city in numbers of AIDS cases and surrogate markers for HIV. The East and Central Harlem Care Networks report cumulative AIDS cases of 4,101 and 5,420 respectively. The incidence of HIV in East and Central Harlem ranks among the highest in the city.

The AIDS Center at North General Hospital is committed to:

	Providing culturally sensitive, comprehensive, and compassionate care to the communities it serves;
	Educating patients, staff, and community about HIV; and
	Conducting scientific investigation.
The AIDS Center’s approach to clinical care is multidisciplinary, integrating a broad array of hospital services on behalf of patient-focused care. The team includes medical providers, nursing, master level social workers, social work assistants, psychiatrists, dietitians, senior health educators, community outreach coordinators, peer educators, and HIV counselors. North General Hospital recently opened a 28 unit non-congregate living facility that provides housing and other service needs to formerly homeless individuals living with HIV/AIDS in New York City. The supportive housing facility is a crucial component of North General Hospital’s Comprehensive Service Plan for AIDS care in the East and Central Harlem area. The AIDS Center offered over 5,300 visits.
