Our Mission & History

Eugene McCabe and Randolph Guggenheimer

Eugene McCabe and Randolph Guggenheimer

Founded in 1979, North General Hospital is committed to the provision of safe, high quality primary and secondary care services; the creation of an integrated health care delivery system; and the promotion of health and health related education. In addition, the Hospital is committed to the economic development of the Harlem communities we serve.

Our very origin is rooted in the idea that people of Central Harlem and East Harlem should have access to the highest quality care in their own community. This was the vision of Eugene McCabe and Randolph Guggenheimer when they founded the Hospital in 1979, and it remains the cornerstone of the Hospital today.

Over the decades, North General Hospital has well earned its reputation for providing expert urban healthcare.
