The spotlight was on men’s health at North General Hospital this Father’s Day weekend and the urgent need to address the health disparities for African American and Latino men. The North General Hospital Fourth Annual Men’s Health Forum, “An Evening of Motown” was held on Friday, June 15th. The free-to-the-public event included roundtable discussions on pressing health concerns and practical ways to address them, a free buffet supper and live music by Knappertime.

Free screenings for diabetes, cholesterol, prostate cancer, Hepatitis C and HIV were also offered throughout the event. Once again, the “Friends” volunteered their time to the event and even recruited members of “The Malik Fraternity,” and the “Riverside Business and Professional Women” to help! The volunteers aided in registering participants, stuffing give-away bags, distributing leaflets and brochures and providing general assistance throughout the event.

On Tuesday, May 29th, North General Hospital celebrated our Fifth Annual Eugene McCabe Memorial Golf Classic at Whippoorwill Golf Club in Armonk, New York. The generosity of our friends and donors helped us raised more than $130,000 to fund Hospital programs and services. The Golf Classic was created to honor and celebrate the life and vision of North General Hospital’s co-founder, Eugene McCabe and the support of the “Friends” exemplified his spirit. They were on hand to register guests, stuff bags and provide support to our staff.

As the signature fund-raising event for the American Heart Association, the American Heart Walk promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living in a fun family environment. North General’s “Friends” helped recruit walkers and participated, themselves, in this worthy cause, raising funds in North General’s name.

April – June 2007
“The Young Heroes”, along with the help of young members of “Jack and Jill,” gathered together to add a touch of beauty to the front of our Hospital! With flowers donated by Jack and Jill as well as purchased through funds raised by the Friends, these young volunteers planted hundreds of flowers outside of the Hospital’s main entrance.

In recognition of “National Volunteer Week” (April 15-21) the Friends held an awards reception in the hospital Cafeteria honoring hospital friends and volunteers. Any volunteer action—no matter how big or how small—can create positive change in a community and each of our honorees has proven that in our Hospital.

Their commitment to service and to our hospital serves as an example to the rest of us who walk these halls every day. And when the staff of North General sees that we are receiving the support of our community, it helps us to believe in our work and ourselves because we know it is not going unnoticed. It helps to know that we are all working together toward a common goal of creating a healthier Harlem. Congratulations to this year’s honorees: “The Young Heroes”, Ms. Liana Ponce, Dr. Crisanta Mosende-Reyes, Mrs. Barbara Williams, Mr. Livingston Francis, and Dr. Karen Hopkins.
